Your Birth Star’s Nadi and what it says about You

The Moon is the most important, personal and private planet in our charts — one that is focused on the most in vedic astrology. The Moon’s nakshatra placement even has a special name: The Birth Star. It is the Moon which shows who we truly are in this lifetime, and also how we get our emotional needs fulfilled. The nadi of your Moon’s nakshatra shows the energy through which you will feel the most naturally connected with the world and people around you. There are three nadis:

  • Pitta
  • Kapha
  • Vata

The Moon in the 3 Nadis

Pitta is the fiery nadi, the masculine principle, the yang in Chinese thought. It ignites, activates, digests and acts. Pitta is what we need to do what we must or want to do.
People with the Moon in a Pitta nakshatra enjoy the experience of Pitta above all — it’s the activity that makes them feel like they’re really connected to the world. At rest they can feel left out of life’s experiences, and generally just distant. So these people need to have activity to be emotionally healthy, making them naturally ambitious. However, it can get to be too much, making them prone to Pitta dosha (dosha – a fault) — excess Pitta, causing anger and frustration in the person. That can show the person needs to find a more balanced emotional life, not putting all eggs in one basket.

Kapha is the watery nadi, the feminine principle, and the yin in Chinese thought. This is the energy of receptivity, of rest, contemplation and relaxation. Yin yoga is popular because people in general struggle with finding healthy ways to relax in the modern world. Kapha can give a deeper and more sensitive personality — people with the Moon in a Kapha nakshatra feel emotionally connected when they relax, rest and have stability in their lives. If there is too much chaos, activity or change they will feel out of place and will try to get back into a more stable rythm. This too can go too far however, causing Kapha dosha. Result? Overeating, stagnation, over-sleeping and depression. A Kapha Moon person at that stage needs to find conscious ways to emotionally connect with people around him — reducing the need for excessive rest.

Vata is the windy or airy nadi, the interchange between the feminine and masculine principles, the yin in the yang, the yang in the yin. Vata is necessary to deal with the changes and dynamism in our lives, keeping the balance between the activity and restfulness. Vata Moon people have a greater need for freedom, flexibility and change in life, without which the person can feel off and unfulfilled. They then typically compensate by creating arbitrary chaos in their life and immersing themselves into intellectual activities. Ironically, being the balancing force, Vata is the energy which goes out of balance the easiest, with Vata dosha cases constituting 80% of the three doshas. The result is anxiety, worries, disorganized living and even ADHD. The solution for a Vata Moon person with Vata dosha is the same as for previous two — finding healthy stable ways to connect with others, reducing need for excessive change and stimulation.

Importance of Nadis

The nadis are better known as the three doshas in Ayurveda, highlighting their tendency to get out of balance and cause a dosha – a fault. There are many ways this can happen, for example from the ascendant one can see which nadi is likely to cause a dosha on a physical level – fragility and weakness for vata, acne and overactive metabolism for pitta and slow metabolism, obesity for kapha. For a good compatibility having same Moon nadi for both people is not considered good. This is so because if two people with the same nadi live together, the likelihood of their Moon’s nadi getting into excess, thus causing a dosha, gets doubled.

It’s important to note that any one person is incredibly complex, and even when it comes to just evaluating the nadi of the moon many different factors would go into this astrologically — The Moon’s nakshatra is just the most important factor next to Moon’s sign placement and aspects from planets etc. If you’re curious to know more, I have a birth chart reading where I cover this — read more about the birth chart reading.
